I am a dedicated Paediatric Clinical Associate at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Malawi. Holding a Diploma in Clinical Medicine and an Honors BSc in Paediatrics and Child Health, i am a vital member of the healthcare team, responsible for the clinical care of sick children. My expertise lies particularly in paediatric cardiology, where i co-lead the cardiology clinic at KCH.
In my clinical practice, I collaborate closely with Dr. Amy Sanyahumbi, a paediatric cardiologist from Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital. This partnership extends beyond direct patient care to encompass significant research initiatives.
I have been actively involved in investigating critical aspects of child health in Malawi. One notable study explored the relationship between sepsis and cardiac dysfunction, specifically examining its impact on mortality and lactate levels in young patients. Furthermore, I am deeply committed to improving the outcomes for children with Rheumatic Heart Disease. As part of this commitment, i was involved in a project focused on enhancing adherence to benzathine penicillin, a cornerstone of treatment. This important work included conducting verbal autopsies on children who have tragically died from Rheumatic Heart Disease during the course of the adherence study.
Our collaborative research with Dr. Sanyahumbi also includes investigating the potential link between intestinal worm infestations and heart disease. Currently, we are engaged in research aimed at identifying a biomarker that could facilitate the rapid diagnosis of acute rheumatic fever.
Beyond my dedication to clinical care and research, I am passionate about strengthening the healthcare system in Malawi. Together with Dr Sanyahumbi, we actively participate in capacity-building efforts through training programs for local medical staff and by leading echocardiography training workshops, thereby contributing to the advancement of specialized skills within the country.
